Security guard killed in tiger attack

A security guard was killed in an alleged tiger attack at a tea estate under Mudumalai forest area, near Gudalur, in Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu.

The deceased was identified as Meghavar (44) from Jharkhand. According to sources, he was working for Devan Solawood Breyar Tea Factory for the past several years and was living with his wife.

On Friday night, when Meghavar had gone out of the house to attend nature’s call, the tiger might have attacked and killed him. His wife who could not find him on Saturday morning went in search of him, only to find him dead inside the tea estate.

A majority of his body parts had been devoured by the tiger. Gudalur police have registered a case.

Nilgiri District Collector Shankar and DCF Tejaswi, who visited the spot, announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh and presented a cheque for Rs 3 lakh to his wife. The remaining amount would be issued after the postmortem report is received, it is said.

Forest department personnel had already placed cages in all four directions of the tea estate and had installed CCTV cameras at several places to trap the tiger, which was frequently spotted in the area. Residents had also lodged complaint with forest department in this regard.
