Last Updated 18 February 2010, 18:52 IST

Nearly 200 students belonging to the PhD Research Scholars Union demonstrated against the State government’s decision for over two hours on the campus.

Ravikumar Baagi, a member of the union who participated in the protest said that the move was an attempt to politicise food habits of people by the Government. “Eating beef is a matter of personal preference and not something that is of public interest. Ours is a diverse nation with a variety of food habits and the Government has no role in dictating what people should eat,” he said.

Students also dared the Government to ban all meat and not specifically beef. “Vegetarians will say that all meat is against their sentiments. Non-vegetarians will also say that vegetarianism is against their belief,” Baagi questioned.

The research scholars also contended that he total ban was simply an attempt to rake up an unnecessary controversy by the State government.
