A 24-year-old private college lecturer, riding pillion on a two-wheeler, was killed after a city bus ran over her near Nanthoor on Wednesday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Joyline Monis, a Commerce lecturer at St Agnes College and daughter of John Monis, editor of a Konkani monthly magazine.

According to police, Joyline’s younger sister, a second-year BCom student at St Aloysius College, was riding the two-wheeler when the mishap occurred.

One-way
It may be mentioned here that the stretch between Nanthoor and Kadri was made one-way some time ago as the stretch is being concretised. A few two-wheeler and four-wheeler users, however, continue plying the narrow stretch.

As the sisters reached Chefs Restaurant, which is located between Kadri and Nanthoor, a city bus plying towards Nanthoor brushed the two-wheeler, throwing both the sisters on the road.

The rear tyre of the bus ran over Joyline, killing her on the spot. Joyline’s sister Jacqueline escaped unhurt. The bus driver fled the spot immediately after the accident.

A large number of students and nuns from the college gathered in front of the mortuary soon after they heard the news. A case has been registered.
