EC money seizure crosses Rs 14 cr in TN

Further cracking the whip on poll violations, the Election Commission (EC) in Tamil Nadu on Monday seized more unaccounted money across the State, taking the total amount so far to Rs 14 crore.

The commission also seized gift articles, including jewellery, worth several lakhs. The Election Commission received more than two lakh complaints regarding violation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

As on Monday, the commission received a total of 1,90,192 complaints related to MCC violation. A total of 150 FIRs have been registered in this regard.

Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Lakhoni said the commission has so far seized Rs 14.73 crore unaccounted money and on Monday alone, the money seizure exceeded more than Rs 30 lakh. In addition, gift articles worth several lakhs were seized. Also, hundreds of cases of liquor bottles were confiscated since Model Code of Conduct was imposed. 

According to the Election Commission, cameras have been installed at nearly 38,000 places in the state to check violation of MCC.

All the money, which was seized by the EC, was deposited in the treasury. The commission also said that about 1,500 flying squad personnel have been appointed at various check points.
