Experimenting with global flavours

Last Updated 30 March 2016, 18:31 IST
The gastro-pub Hive Kitchen & Bar is the latest entrant to the Green Park Main Market which is otherwise a hub of luxurious salons, small cafes and Quick Service Restaurants (QSR). Easy to locate, the place occupies two floors — the lower level (on first floor) houses a cheerful cafe style eatery with informal table settings, whereas the upper level, which is the terrace, is the lounge area having glass ceiling with water dripping along the surface giving effect of mock-rain.

The walls, embellished with hexagonal beehive motifs, represent community bonding; and mono-cycle bar stools and industrial chic furniture give casual outlook to the place.

Co-owner of Hive, Abhinav Mathur, 32, who runs other such venture in the vicinity at the Hauz Khas Village (HKV), says, “Green Park has got many offices and work place. There are few cafes and QSRs, but not any fine dining place where one can sit and talk over food. Hive, as the name suggests, is the place where you can get into a conversations, while relishing some good food. The casual ambience here goes well with any kind of banter.”

The menu offers global flavours — from Moroccan to Italian to Spanish. There is a well-stocked bar at both the floors. As the lower level was non-function in the afternoon, Metrolife settled on the upper floor from where the market was partially visible. To start with, Mathur suggested us to try, Patata Bravas and the clove cocktail. Cubed potatoes topped with spicy Pomodoro sauce had a tangy taste, serving best as an appetiser. And, the clove-flavoured vodka-base cocktail was no doubt a refreshing one!

Next arrival was the Naan Pizza, an Indian take of pizza with naan base. With toppings of mushrooms, black olives, jalapenos and mozzarella cheese, Naan Pizza was rich in taste. The next dish was Crispy Chicken Croquettes. Cylindrical, chicken nuggets were served with Hive’s in-house sun-dried tomato-caper dip. However, our favourite was the Panko Crumbed Amritsari style fish nuggets. Served with home-made mint chutney, the crispy, large fish pieces earned all the points from us.

From the main course, Spinach and Corn Crepes served with sundried tomato and chilli orange sauce, juicy lamb burger flavoured with in-house spice rub, jalapenos and black olives and served with French fries and braised lamb shank served with mashed potatoes and red wine jus are some of the good picks.

So, now during the weekend night when you find it hard enter the crowded HKV, opt for Hive. Apart from great food, it also provides you ample parking space as Green Park Market gets closed by 8 pm.
