Car thief rams constable, flees

A habitual offender rammed a stolen car into a police constable and fled the spot while he was about to be arrested near Yellamma Devi Temple in Chunchaghatta, off Kanakapura Road, in the early hours of Wednesday.

The police said that Prem Kumar had driven away with the car which was parked in front of a house in HMT Layout March 23.

On Tuesday around 10.30 pm, the police received the information that Kumar was in Chunchunghatta.

Three constables and a home guard from RT Nagar police station went to the spot and found Kumar sitting in the stolen car with two of his friends.

The police asked him to surrender. Two the constables were standing in front of the car while another constable and the home guard were behind the car, added the police.

In his attempt to flee, Kumar, reversed the car and Sridhara Murthy, a constable, who was standing behind the vehicle came under the wheel and was dragged for a few metres.

Later Kumar got down from the vehicle and began to run. But the other constables   caught his shirt, but it was lose and Kumar managed to get rid of the shirt and flee. The other two persons who were in the car also escaped, police said.

Murthy was rushed to a hospital with grievous injuries and he is stated to be stable. “A special team has been formed to nab him,” said a senior police officer.

He was earlier arrested in connection with a car-lifting case and had come out on bail recently. Subramanyapura police have registered a case.
