Almost one-fourth of candidates in second phase of Assam polls are crorepatis with AIDUF chief Badruddin Ajmal topping the list with Rs 54.82 crore.

There are 125 candidates in the second phase who have assets more than Rs one crore, according to private watchdog Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). The ADR had analysed affidavits of 523 of the 525 candidates contesting the second phase of elections in Assam. Twenty-nine candidates have assets worth more than Rs 5 crore.

The Congress has the highest number of 30 crorepati candidates followed by 19 of BJP, 12 of AIUDF, 9 of Asom Gana Parishad and six of Bodoland Peoples Front.

Thirty-nine of 216 independent candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs one crore.

The average of assets per candidate contesting in second phase of the Assam Assembly Elections is Rs 1.26 crore.

Among major parties, the average assets per candidate for the Congress is Rs 2.64 crore, while for the BJP, it is Rs 2.46 crores and AIUDF Rs 2.44 crore.

Though Ajmal is the richest among the candidates of second phase, he is not the wealthiest if one compares all candidates of both the first and second phases of polls. Independent Jyoti Subba, wife of former MP and lottery baron M K Subba, is the richest candidate for whole of Assam with Rs 288 crore.

An independent candidate Naba Kumar Nath is the poorest candidate in the second phase of polls. He has declared that he has assets of Rs 282 only.
