Town police have arrested a 25-year-old man on the charges of raping a minor at Shankarpur Layout in the town on Sunday.
The police have revealed the identity of the suspect Dadapeer alias Janglee, a resident of Shankarpur Layout.
According to the police, the victim, a neighbour of Dadapeer, on Saturday night came out of her house to relieve herself. Dadapeer dragged her to a vacant place nearby and committed the heinous crime.
Parents of the victim started searching for daughter after she didn't turn up. They found her lying in pain behind their house and soon got to know that she was subjected to rape. The parents lodged a complaint with Town police, the police said. Based on the statement of the victim, the police arrested Dadapeer. Investigations are on.
Delay in investigation
The incident has triggered protest in the town. A group of people including the relatives of the victim, accusing the police of inordinate delay in carrying out investigations, expressed their anguish by staging roadblock and burning tyres on the road.
The protesters alleged that the victim was subjected to gang rape and that the police should arrest all those involved in the crime.
The agitators relented after Additional SP G B Manjunath rushed to the spot and assured the protesters that strict action will be initiated against the culprits.
Addl SP Manjunath, DySP K R Ravikumar and staff have camped in the town to prevent any untoward incident.
