PM orders review of drought

Last Updated 10 April 2016, 20:02 IST

After facing flak in the Supreme Court, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ordered a review of the drought situation in Bundelkhand, Vidarbha and Marathwada regions of the country.

At the first such review meeting, the Prime Minister’s Office had summoned the chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday to review the drought situation in Bundelkhand region.

The Centre has decided to release Rs 1,304 crore for Uttar Pradesh for drought relief under the National Disaster Relief Fund.

The state government has been asked to disburse the relief amount directly into the bank accounts of farmers within a week, a PMO statement said.

The Centre has also decided to “expeditiously” announce the minimum support price for sesame, the most important kharif crop for Bundelkhand. The Modi government had faced flak last year for the delay in announcing MSP for kharif season.
