Renovated physiotherapy unit at Wenlock to open today

 Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader will inaugurate the renovated physiotherapy unit building and District Early Intervention Centre (DEIC) at Wenlock Hospital on April 19.

Dr Rajeshwari Devi H R Wenlock Hospital Superintendent, has said that the 170-year-old hospital had a physiotherapy unit for the last 50 years. The renovated unit that will be inaugurated, has been provided state-of-the art facilities.

“Only one patient could have been treated under electrotherapy in the past. Now, with the purchase of additional equipment, three patients can be treated at a time, using the hi-tech machines,” she said.

Funds and facilities

The Rotary Club has given Rs 20 lakh for the equipment. The funds available under Arogya Raksha Samithi have been used for the construction of building. The students of MV Shetty College of Physiotherapy and Sri Devi College of Physiotherapy provide clinical facility at the physiotherapy wing of the hospital, she informed.

Dr Rajeshwari Devi said that the physiotherapy wing will have sonoplus combination therapy unit, eltrac-cervical and lumbar traction unit, hydraulic tilting table, quadriceps table, TENS, ultrasound, IFT, muscle stimulator, laser, cryotherapy unit, wax bath, hydrocollateral unit, elliptical cycle, static cycle, treadmill, multi arm-exerciser, and rowing machine. The physiotherapy unit provides electro therapy and exercise therapy, she added.

DEIC

She said that the DEIC will be opened in all the districts in the state under the National Health Mission.

The DEIC is set up to reduce the infant mortality rate, for the early detection of defects in birth and deficiency conditions. The programme will monitor the mental health of children and also increase enrolment rate in schools, the superintendent said, and added that the DEIC will treat  children suffering from malnutrition at the time of birth. All children below 18 years of age will be covered under the scheme.

The DEIC will have eight outpatient departments with specialists offering free service. It will have counsellors, paediatricians, child psychologists, psychiatrists, dentists, ENT specialists, audiologists, clinics for neuromuscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy, she added.

The centre will help confirm diagnosis of children referred for defects at birth, deficiency diseases and developmental delays including disabilities.
