One student was killed and another suffered serious injuries in a violent clash between two groups on the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus on Saturday night.

According to police sources here, a mob of students set ablaze the proctor’s office and torched several vehicles near the vice-chancellor’s residence.

Sources said that violence broke out after an altercation between two groups of students earlier in the day near Aftab Hall inside the campus. The rival groups clashed again around midnight.

Shots were fired from both sides, sources said adding that two people suffered from bullet injuries and were admitted to the hospital.

A former student of Aligarh Muslim University, identified as Mehtab, succumbed to his injuries in the wee hours, while the other was stated to be critical.

The police, which rushed to the campus on getting the information, resorted to firing in the air to disperse the warring groups.

PAC personnel had been deployed on campus to maintain order. AMU administration said that preliminary investigation revealed that students from Ghazipur, Azamgarh and Sambhal were involved in the violence.

Action against students

“We are trying to identify the students...stern action will be taken against them”, said a varsity official in Aligarh.
