A dash of glamour

Working hard towards achieving what you strongly feel for is what is perhaps termed as ‘being passionate’, and that is what can be seen in the case of designer Vidhi Wadhwani.

She always wanted to get into something creative and looked forward to being a part of NIFT, New Delhi. That’s what she did —she worked hard towards fulfilling her dreams.

“I worked under Satya Paul right after completeing my fashion and design course. I used to organise various exhibitions myself to understand the market. Once I had a clue about what customers look for and what is trending, I launched my label under my name,” says Vidhi.

Her works exhibit an Indo-Western fusion, which is her forte. And she makes sure that her customers can easily wear an outfit designed by her in different ways (Western or Indian). Vidhi works with a lot of international fabrics as well as hand work like embroidery. “Though I work with embellishments and embroidery, I make sure to keep it minimal. The emphasis of my work is more on the patterns and drapes. So, eventually the final work has an international look yet is attached to its Indian roots,” she explains.

Though she looked up to many top designers, she always strove to make her own mark in the fashion world. With the different concepts and looks that she has worked towards, she is climbing the ladder of success, slowly and steadily. “I make sure that I do something new every season for my collection. Studying in a good college gives one ample exposure, and the rest of the learning and understanding happens along the way,” she says.

Her last collection — ‘Sayurii’ — was heavily influenced by Oriental designs (dragonflies, applique work and also origami especially in terms of cuts, being dominant.) It is her strong suit to use one motif in different ways and she is working on newer patterns and textures for her upcoming collection. The focus of this collection will be a Spanish and Italian influence, while keeping the 70s vibe and the latest trends in mind.

“There should be something edgy about each outfit I design; this is a key
element that I keep in mind.

Apart from which, innovative detailing and an impeccable finish are the other things I ensure while working on any outfit.I make it a point to use a fabric in innovative ways and incorporate them in different attires,” she details.

So what’s her advice for budding designers? Vidhi says, “If you love it, continue to do it because persistence and patience always pay off.”
