A group of ministers (GoM) constituted by the Centre for framing stricter traffic rules have recommended increasing age limit for renewal of driving licences to 60 years.

The group of state transport ministers headed by Rajasthan Transport Minister Yunus Khan tasked by the Centre to improve road safety and transport sector held its first meeting on Friday.

At present, a licence is valid for 20 years from the date it is issued or till the holder completes 50 years of age, following which it is to be renewed every 5 years.

The panel also suggested registration of new vehicles at dealers point instead of Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) to avoid hassles to vehicle buyers. The panel also recommended for installation of CCTV, GPS and speed governor in all public transport vehicles as part of safety features. While making simple and uniform forms for all transport related works across the country, the panel suggested online test for issuing learning licences to avoid public going to transport offices.

To avoid getting fitness certificate for vehicles every year, the panel recommended fitness certificate only after a vehicle completes 3 years and thereafter to be renewed every alternate year till it completes 7-8 years.
