Acute water shortage in many Delhi areas

Last Updated 06 May 2016, 21:41 IST

Most parts of the Capital faced water shortage on Friday as water level dropped in the Yamuna.

With the exception of east Delhi, areas in north, west, and central Delhi received a cut in their supply or no water at all on Friday morning after an “acute” drop in the Yamuna level on Thursday.

This was because of the heat and a brief closure of Munak Canal – from where the city gets much of its water – by neighbouring Haryana after a child drowned there.
Due to this the supply of water from Delhi Jal Board's Wazirabad and Chandrawal water treatment plants was curtailed by more than 50%.

Water supply remained at low pressure in entire Delhi, except the trans-Yamuna areas in east Delhi.

These two plants account for 25% of the DJB’s total water supply. East Delhi, however, depends on Upper Ganga Canal for its supply DJB officials said the situation will improve by Saturday and “no major impact” will be seen.

“There was a drop of 80 cusecs of water from Haryana,” a senior DJB official said. Haryana tried to increase the `pond level’ by diverting 300 cusecs water from Munak Carrier Lined Canal (CLC)  to the river course.

“But it did not have any impact because evaporation was very high and most of the water evaporated before reaching Delhi," the official said.

The city government has been claiming that this summer would be the best for Delhiites in terms of water supply.

“There is no immediate crisis but If it does not rain, it could be a harsh summer,” an official said.

DJB distributes 900 million gallons per day (MGD) of water in Delhi. Out of this, 543 MGD (almost 60 per cent) comes from Haryana and around 240 MGD from Uttar Pradesh through Upper Ganga Canal.

Out of this 240 MGD, Tehri dam contributes 470 cusecs (235 MGD) through the Upper Ganga Canal. This water is treated at Sonia Vihar and Bhagrathi treatment plants and goes to east Delhi and south Delhi.
