A 40-year-old trader was shot dead for allegedly helping police conduct raids on gamblers in east Delhi.

The attackers were also involved in cricket betting in the ongoing Indian Premier League, police said.

Mahender Chand Ramola lived in Shahdara with his wife and two children and owned MCR Jeans at Welcome. He was attacked in east Delhi’s Seelampur on Monday.
After the initial probe, police have arrested 23-year-old Mohammad Wasim, a resident of Welcome.

On Monday, Ramola was dragged out of his office by Wasim and his accomplices at 10 pm.

“He was then shot dead in the street,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Ajit Kumar Singla.

The eyewitnesses told police that four armed assailants were there on a scooty and motorcycle. While fleeing, the men also took Ramola’s licensed pistol.
The entire incident was caught on CCTV cameras installed at Ramola’s office and nearby areas.

A case under Indian Penal Code and Arms Act has been registered with Seelampur police station.

Wasim was identified on the basis of CCTV footage and was also identified by Ramola’s family members.

On being questioned, Wasim disclosed that he along with Azim, Sameer and Ashraf attacked Ramola.

“They were all involved in gambling activities and also took part in cricket betting,” Singla added.

Recently, the local police had started conducting raids to bust such gambling activities. Wasim and his accomplices suspected that information provided by Ramola was the source of the police raids.

“They had arranged a meeting at the house of a man named Sharif to take revenge,” Singla said.

The men followed Ramola for two days and were looking for an opportunity to go unnoticed. They attacked when Ramola was preparing to leave office on Monday.

He was declared brought dead at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

Wasim has criminal history. He was named in a case filed with Hauz Khas police station in 2013, Seelampur in 2014 and Welcome in 2015.
