The farmers of North Karnataka, under the Kalasa Banduri Horata Samiti, intensified their protest in Dharwad on Wednesday and picketed Amminbhavi jackwell, which supplies Malaprabha water to meet the drinking water demand in Hubballi-Dharwad.

A decision to this effect was taken by the agitators after their repeated appeals made to the elected representatives failed to get any concrete assurance.

The agitators are demanding that the Mahadayi river which originates in Karnataka and flows into Goa be linked with Malaprabha river so that four districts get irrigation facility.
However, the Goa government has objected to this.

On Wednesday, hundreds of farmers laid siege to the Amminbhavi water treatment unit, 10 km from Dharwad. They said both Congress and BJP leaders are engaged in blame game and hence, the Centre is delaying in giving its nod to the project.

It is high time that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah leads a dharna in front of the prime minister’s residence in New Delhi over the issue, they said.

Unless there is concrete assurance from the government, water supply will continue to be disconnected to the twin cities, the protesters threatened.
