There are many urban students who have scored 624/625. But the feat is more admirable, when it is by a girl from a remote corner of the state.

Mahima Manjunath Bhat stood against all odds to be among the many second place holders. What adds that extra glow to her achievement is that she has done it in Kannada medium. The girl is from the nondescript village of Benagaon in Sirsi taluk of Uttara Kannada district and her parents are agriculturists.

With no transport or telephone connectivity to her village, she stayed at her grandfather’s house in Sonagijaddi. Her relatives in Bengaluru called up to break the news to her. But Mahima could not convey the happy news to her parents, as Benagaon has no telephone connectivity.

Mahima’s grandfather used to drop the girl to school, 5 km away, every day. Studying lessons taught at school promptly at home every day helped her a lot. Space studies or BSc (agriculture) is what Mahima aims to do.
