Forum extends support to June 4 police protest

Nagarika Hitharakshana Vedike has extended support to the police personnel, who have decided to go on mass leave on June 4, demanding fulfillment of their demands from the government.

Addressing a press conference, Vedike leader Prasanna Bhat said a protest will be held at General K S Thimmaiah Circle  demanding the fulfillment of the demands of the police personnel on that day. If the police personnel are not sanctioned leave, their family members will take part in the protest. A memorandum will be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner on the occasion, he added.

He said Kodagu district has 1,200 constables and 324 posts are lying vacant. As many as 102 posts are lying vacant in DAR. The salary of a constable is Rs 17,000 per month his counterpart in Andhra Pradesh takes home Rs 28,000 per month while head constables get Rs 47,000 per month. This disparity in the salary should be removed. The salary of the police personnel was revised when H D Deve Gowda was the chief minister. The report of the Police Reforms Commission and Supreme Court guidelines should be implemented effectively for the welfare of police personnel. The police personnel should be given a one-day weekly off compulsorily, he demanded.

At a separate press meet, State Retired Police Personnel Welfare Federation opposed the protest call given by the police.

Federation President M A Appayya said the protest call has been given by office-bearers of an unrecognised association. The police personnel should drop the proposal of the protest and fight for their demands though a legal way, he observed.
