When wraps ruled

New entry

Gurgaon Sector 29 main market, which is already bustling with restaurants and food joints, got another entrant Barcelos. It is the third outlet of the South African restaurant (other two at Khan Market and Hauz Khas), which is apparently the “world’s biggest” opening. Spanning over 5,500 square foot area, it covers the basement and upper floor with a sitting capacity of 170 people.

Rohit Malhotra, business head, Barcelos India, says, “With a motive of making our brand more accessible to our consumers in Delhi, NCR, this time we have decided to come up in Gurgaon, which is a quite happening spot amongst the corporate crowd of Gurgaon.”

European-themed interior with wooden table and cosy couches gives the place an urban look. Slow music humming in the backdrop makes the ambience lively and refreshing. The open-roof vintage car, kept in the basement, where one can sit and enjoy food, earns the restaurant an extra point. There is also a live kitchen and bar where patrons can enjoy watching their food being prepared and drinks shaken and stirred.

The menu offers a number of Portuguese dishes tweaked to suit the Indian palate.  It recently introduced a new menu of coloured mini wraps. To start with we ordered the wraps along with Carribean Shangria and Dirty Rose among the cocktails. As our order took a little long to arrive, in the interim period we were served with peri-peri nuts (spiced and salted nuts) to munch on and wait. Soon the drinks arrived. Carribean Shangria, made with white wine and Malibu rum had a little sweetness of orange and pineapple dices in it; whereas, Dirty Rose is a Portuguese delicacy of wine with tropical fruit flavour.

Meanwhile, the wraps also came. Small wraps in four colours — red, yellow, white and green — and different filling — chicken, mutton, fish and veg — with choices of peri-peri sauces, served in a wooden dish were a delight for the eyes. Taste wise too, the wraps earned full points. We then tried their four different coloured — red, white, black and yellow — mini slider burgers. One must try Barcelos’ burger whenever they visit the place. Peri-peri chicken sizzler  and Fish kebabs are other good picks. Among the cocktails, you can try Ola! and Tipo Tinto which are Portuguese by their origin and have a strong flavour of beetal leaves and mango respectively.
