Last Updated 08 June 2016, 19:02 IST

Normal life was severely affected in Tamil Nadu as heavy rains battered the state since Tuesday night with the weatherman predicting more downpours over the next two days due to the southwest monsoon which arrived in Kerala on Wednesday.

People in the state woke up to cloudy skies for the third consecutive day as rains and thundershowers continued to lash the region, especially Chennai. The Meteorological department officials said the weather conditions were favourable for more rains in the next 48 hours.

“Two cyclonic circulations were prevailing on both sides of Peninsular India with one of them well marked in west-central Bay of Bengal. Under this influence, heavy rain will occur in Tamil Nadu and its adjoining areas,” a senior Met official told Deccan Herald on Wednesday evening.

According to him, strong winds from the southwesterly direction, with speed occasionally reaching 45-55 kmph, were likely along and off the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts in the next couple
of days.
