PU admission confusion leads to protest at Mount Carmel

Last Updated 08 June 2016, 20:17 IST

Parents staged a protest outside Mount Carmel PU College on Wednesday, saying the admissions closed early due to which they were unable to pay the fees.

Protesters were parents of candidates whose names had appeared in the first merit list. They said the college closed admissions at 10.30 am on May 28 which was the last date to pay the fees. A parent said on the condition of anonymity, “My daughter has secured 91% and her name was in the first list which was out on May 27. We were asked to come on May 28 for admission. Around 10.30 am on May 28, the management announced that if a student wants a seat, she has to get admitted through management quota as there were no vacant merit seats.” The parent said they are feeling helpless as they do not even have another choice left now.

Countering the allegations, college principal Dr Sister Ashwini said the protesters assaulted a lecturer and the college had lodged a police complaint.

“We received 8,000 applications this year. We cannot consider everyones’ application. The PU results were announced late and so was the calender of events. This made the process difficult,” she said. Sr Ashwini said parents were allowed to pay the fees till the “college hours were over” and college did not close fee payment counters at 10.30 am as claimed by parents.
