Govt ready to face BJP-ruled MCDs

Makes plans to expose corpns failure
Last Updated 09 June 2016, 05:12 IST

The AAP government has put in place a strategy by assigning special roles to its ministers and “live wire” legislators to expose the alleged inefficiency of the three BJP-ruled municipal corporations during the two-day Assembly session starting on Thursday.

According to sources in the ruling party, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra will lead the firing from the treasury benches against the BJP-ruled municipal corporations.

The government is also considering to pass a resolution to take greater over the three corporations or take away the sanitation function of the corporations.

On previous occasions, the elected governments in the city have taken over the responsibility of fire fighting and drinking water distribution from the civic agency.

“The corruption in the municipal corporations and the insanitary conditions in the city due to the civic agencies’ inefficiency would be the main agenda,” said a legislator from Walled City.

Poor performance

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is also likely to bank upon firebrand Chandni Chowk legislator Alka Lamba, Tilak Nagar legislator Jarnail Singh and Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan, among others like Saurabh Bhardwaj and Bhavna Gaur, for lambasting the civic agencies for poor performance on sanitation, corruption and financial mismanagement.

“The Assembly session would set the tone for the MCD polls in 2017,” said Lamba.

Opposition strength

The strength of Opposition BJP would be down to two from three, due to expulsion of Vishwas Nagar MLA O P Sharma, but the party may try to raise issues of alleged corruption in the AAP government.

The BJP is planning to bring in an adjournment motion against the AAP government over the issue of alleged corruption in the app-based premium bus scheme.

Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta said on Wednesday that the BJP may limited numbers in the House but that would not prevent the party from highlighting the Kejriwal regime’s wrongdoings.

“The government colluded with private companies to implement an app-based premium bus policy,” said Gupta, warning the AAP government of facing a combative  opposition.

Unconstitutional

The BJP leader questioned the emergency for which the special two-day session of the House has been called to discuss civic agencies’  functioning. “The calling of the session is unconstitutional,” he said.

Gupta said that the Anti-Corruption Branch on Wednesday called Transport Secretary indicating the depth of corrupt and irregular practices in the premium bus services scam.

He said that the Delhi Government will bring an adjournment motion under Section 59 of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha Rules. The Opposition will force the Government to discuss the case in place of discussing three MCDs.

The session would also see election of a new Deputy Speaker in place of Kumari Bandana, who resigned soon after the recent byelection to civic wards.

AAP legislator Jarnail Singh said the Assembly session on civic conditions was necessary as the BJP-ruled agencies have failed to improve themselves despite earlier  notices issued to them by the Delhi government.

“Warning against civic officials have also been issued by the AAP government but things have not improved,” he said.

A one-day special joint session of the three BJP-ruled corporations has been called in the Ramlila Ground on Thursday to  protest against the AAP government's decision to call the two-day special Assembly session starting Thursday.
