JOIN USIt was a tough, long and disappointing day at office on the second day of the US Open in Oakmont. Well, technically it was the second day, but for me, and Jeev Milkha Singh, it was two days’ work rolled into one and it was a real grueling one.
The end result did not make a very nice picture. With rounds of 73 and 78, I am out as is Jeev with rounds of 76 and 79. The US Open is always a massive challenge, but even then these scores were a disappointment.
It is never easy to play 36 holes in a Major in a single day, but as professionals we all also know that is something that will happen often when the weather is tough.
But then, the conditions at US Open are something else. They have been brutal and the greens were difficult to handle – of course they are the same for all. I just could not get into my rhythm.
I did have a chance of sorts after the first round of 73, but I needed a good start in the second round, which was soon after the first.
In the second round, where I began on the back nine, I ran up early bogeys and that set me back. After the bogey start and double bogey on 12th, I had a tough time catching up. By the time I was through I was exhausted. But missing the cut at a Major is never a nice feeling.
Anyhow I will rest and get ready for the coming weeks. There is the Open (British), the PGA and the Olympics and an event or two in between. As I have said before, this is the real busy time of the year.
Elsewhere it is going to be a great battle, as Dustin Johnson has put some very good numbers with 67 and 69 in the first two rounds and is sharing the lead, but Andrew Landry was yet to begin his second round after a fine 66 in first.
It was also wonderful to see Sergio Garcia up there with 68 and 70.
The weekend is here and this is where the Major begins, but sadly I will only be following and not playing it.
