The traffic police carried out a special drive across the city and seized modified vehicles. They also booked vehicles for violating traffic rules on TenderSure roads on Monday.

The drive was carried out after Police Commissioner NS Megharikh issued strict orders to curb the menace of motorists breaking traffic rules.

This order was triggered by the recent shootout where a rowdy-sheeter was killed in Shivajinagar and the policemen were injured while trying to nab the assailants.

“People who indulge in wheeling and drag racing are a nuisance to road users. It was decided that such nuisance will never be tolerated and strict action will be taken,” Megharikh said.

“We received a few registration numbers of vehicles involved in wheeling through our social media. This was forwarded to the traffic police. They cross-checked with the registration numbers and found that they were modified for wheeling and drag racing,’’ added Megharikh C K Baba, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), said, “We first checked with the registration numbers of a few bikes and found out which area the bike is registered in and then we tracked them down. We also questioned a few mechanics who gave us details of several bikes modified for wheeling. We formed a team of traffic police, who traced the vehicles and around nine bikes were seized.”

“We have directed the jurisdictional police to warn mechanics against carrying out such modifications, failing which strict action will be taken. They were also told to inform the police about such modified bikes,” said another senior police officer.

Vehicles violating traffic norms on TenderSure roads were also booked. “It was found that several people used to park on the wrong side or on footpaths blocking traffic. We hired a few private towing vehicles to tow such vehicles. This special drive is being carried out on all TenderSure roads. These roads are meant for people to walk not to park vehicles,” he added.

On Monday, around 32 cases were booked for wrong parking and 23 cases were booked for obstruction traffic on TenderSure roads.
