A BMW car, said to be driven by Siddharth Maharia, son of Independent MLA Nandkishore Maharia, hit an autorickshaw in Jaipur killing three passengers and then rammed into a police van, injuring four policemen.

However, Siddharth, who was  suspected to be in an inebriated state, and his cousin Jayant escaped unhurt as the air bags of the luxury car opened after the initial impact.

Ashok Nagar police station SHO Bala Ram said, “A BMW car allegedly belonging to independent MLA from Fatehpur constituency in Sikar, NandKishore Maharia rammed a three-wheeler, killing three people. MLA’s son Siddharth and two others were in the vehicle which subsequently rammed into a stationary police van, injuring three policemen”.

“The incident took place well past midnight at 1.50 am of Saturday when Siddharth along with his cousin Jayant was going to their house in Jalupura locality in a BMW 520d Sedan,” Bala Ram added.

Police have registered an FIR for rash driving (IPC 279) and culpable homicide (304) and have arrested Siddharth, 24, and detained his cousin Jayant on the basis of a complaint lodged by the only survivor in the auto, Anil Soni.

Siddharth told mediapersons, "Whenever a luxury car or political person is involved in an accident, the doubt of alcohol consumption is often raised. Neither I nor my friends were drunk."

The deceased were identified as passengers Jethalal (35, shoe shop salesman), Vishnu (40, readymade garment vendor), and auto driver Kailash (40).

‘Don’t wait for me, I will be late’

Don’t wait for me, as I will be late in returning home, but keep the door open,” were the last words of Jethalal, 35-year-old salesman at a shoe shop, to his sister Priya before he left for work on Friday morning. He could not return!

Jethalal is one of the passengers who were inside the ill-fated autorickshaw that was rammed by a speeding BMW car. Independent MLA Nandkishore Maharia’s son and cousin were in the BMW. With moist eyes, Jethalal's sister Priya told DH, “My brother Jethalal usually used to ride two wheeler but on Friday he decided not to ride as he thought he’d be delayed due to the heavy rush of Eid shopping.”
