Centre moots distress water sharing formula

With increasing interstate disputes over sharing of river water, the Centre is working on a permanent distress sharing formula in the event of failure of rainfall or low storage of water in reservoirs.

Union Water Resources Secretary Shashi Shekhar, in his recent presentation made to the officials of the Prime Minister’s Office over water and related issues, also mooted for the urgent need for distress sharing formula of water.

At present, the Central Water Commission makes its recommendation for sharing of available water in reservoirs between states, during crises.
