Kejriwal got 563 rank in JEE, says institute

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal did get admission to the prestigious IIT-Kharagpur after cracking the Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) and his All India Rank (AIR) was 563.

Kejriwal, who was admitted to the B.Tech (H) course in Mechanical Engineering (1985-89), had secured a CGPA of 8.42 in the eight-semester course, according to the institute.

The information was provided by IIT-Kharagpur in response to an RTI query by a Lucknow-based girl Aishwarya Parashar. The query, which was originally posed to the Delhi chief minister’s office, had been referred to IIT-Kharagpur by the former. The Delhi CM office had said that it had no records of Kejriwal’s academic qualifications.

“As per available records, Arvind Kumar Kejriwal, Roll Number 8526118 was admitted in B.Tech (H) degree in mechanical engineering through IIT-JEE. All India Rank cards of all admitted candidates for such older session (1985-89) including Arvind Kumar Kejriwal are not traceable...However after in-depth search from admission register, it is found that All India rank of Kejriwal is 563”, said the Institute deputy registrar and Public Information Officer Dr. Anathbandhu Patra, in his reply.

He also said that as per the record, Kejriwal attained SGPA of 7.92, 7.76, 8.17, 8.43, 8.32, 9.39, 9.00 and 8.46 in eight semesters and passed the B.Tech (H) with CGPA of 8.42.

Aishwarya had earlier had sought a reply from the Delhi CM office about Kejriwal’s educational qualifications right from High School to B.Tech. She also sought certified copies of Kejriwal's admit card and roll number allotted to him for the IIT entrance test.

In his reply, Bhupendra Kumar, deputy secretary/public information officer, in the government of NCT of Delhi, said that the information sought was not available on record with his office.

He also informed Aishwarya that the RTI application was being referred to the IIT-Kharagpur as it might have the requisite information.

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy had earlier raised questions regarding Kejriwal's admission to the IIT-Kharagpur after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders had sought details of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's educational qualifications from Delhi University.
