Designer Neha Kullar started her career as a financial consultant. It was only after a small stint in design, Kullar decided to expand her horizons in terms of fashion. Since then there is no looking back for her. She bolstered her reach by supplying, exhibiting and retailing her collections through three multi-designer stores in India UAE, Canada and the USA. Metrolife spoke to the designer who launched her flagship store in Hauz Khas. Read on as she talks more about her creations and fashion.

What is the USP of your creations?
The USP is about contrast, the mix between high and low culture, elegance and street life. There is rich heritage of Indian crafts and textiles with modern aesthetics. My work is embedded with intricate embroidery, vintage palette, cultural differences and modern techniques with very close attention to details.

Tell us about your latest collections?
‘Bohemian Grandiose’ is an inspiration drawn from the Victorian architectural heritage and its grandeur. It has been given a Bohemian approach. Through each piece, you can study a deep story of convergence and divergence. It has been brought to life by an opulent mishmash of fabrics such as dupion silk, organza and matka silk structured by vigorous utilisation of intricate needlework.

What is fashion for you?
Fashion for me is expressing who you are through your fashion choices. What you wear, I think, is what largely defines you. If you come to think about it closely, one can even communicate through one’s fashion choices.

What inspires you?
Our heritage with modern cultures are the two pillars of my inspiration. My fascination with cultural differences inspires me to modernise and combine elements in order to metamorphose traditional outfits.

How do you think fashion has evolved in India?
In India, initially, fashion was more occasion-based but with time it has evolved into a more everyday based element. With increasing access to online portals, fashion is no longer restricted to metropolitan cities or limited communities. It has become more accessible than ever before.

Any fashion tip?
Don’t overdo it. With so much happening around, one tends to go overboard. Keep it simple and basic. The most essential bit is knowing your body type.

Any message to the newbies?
Be a free-bee. Experiment, learn, evolve, it’s a process. Nothing happens overnight.
It’s important to stick to your originality, there’s a very thin line of difference between being inspired and getting influenced. Also, quite a subjective thing though, but it always helps if you stay close to nature. And most importantly, persistence and conviction is what matters at the end of the day.
