Ditching the heavyweight lehengas and sarees, brides today are opting for lightweight ensembles which are more comfortable and functional. It allows them to enjoy their special day freely and not stand like a mannequin.

As the trend of destination weddings is also rising, these travel-friendly attires are gaining popularity. Even the colour choice and fabric have seen a shift; for example: the traditional red and maroon is now replaced by pastel shades, whereas chiffon and silk are preferred as the base material.

Designer duo Diya Aroraa and Rajvvir Aroraa from the label DiyaRajvvir say, “Today brides are opting for stylish yet functional outfits. It’s not a matter of downsising on the big fat Indian wedding, but more for the reason that the brides also want to have fun on their big day.”

“Be it for sangeet, mehendi or other occasions, classic sleek silhouettes, lightweight embellishments, delicate and sheer fabrics are becoming popular for bridal trousseau. It is relevant for various themes of the functions. With the rise of destination wedding, lighter garments which are travel-friendly are gaining popularity. Also, it solves the purpose of reusing the wedding outfits.”

The lightweight fabrics like Banarasi, silk and chiffons that may look and feel delicate are strong enough to hold the intricate craftsmanship of any attire that a bride looks for.

“It’s all about styling and the amount of embroidery that the outfit demands. It’s not necessary that an ensemble has to be completely embellished with workmanship, but even a stunning placement of such detail can make a garment look a million bucks,” says designer Rajdeep Ranawat.

Even the colour pattern has changed from typical red, orange and pink hues to pastels and marshmallow shades. Brides have now become bold and experimental and willing to try new combinations and colours.

According to designer Gautam Gupta, label AshaGautam, “Bridal fashion is going through a lot of changes and colours are one major aspect. Not the basic traditional red and maroons, but people now prefer more of peaches, gold, fuchsia, marsala, lavender, greys. For weddings during the day, brides are opting for fresher and vibrant colour schemes with a wide range of mustard, oranges, and new shades of pink. Evening weddings are more filled with darker shades of teal, gold, marsala, magenta and wine.”

Sporting the outfit with right accessories that compliment the outfit perfectly can let a bride stand out from the crowd. “It’s not the work on the outfit but how your carry it makes you look glamorous. A perfect complimentary pair of earrings, kada and maang tikka would be just the perfect accessory for the bride,” suggests Nishit Gupta, director of KALKI.
