Rana to replace Narsingh?

Last Updated 26 July 2016, 18:48 IST

The Wrestling Federation of India(WFI) has sent the name of Parveen Rana in the 74 category in case Narsingh Yadav failed to get exoneration from the doping charge.

Rana’s entry was sent through Indian Olympic Association (IOA). As per a release on the website of United World Wresting, it was stated that since Narsingh’s positive result came outside of the qualification event, India would be allowed to field a replacement.

A WFI official informed that United World Wrestling got to know about the positive dope test of Narsingh Yadav on July 19. It then gave WFI a deadline of July 25 to send a replacement or else they would reallocate the berth to some other country.

“..A report filed by the National Anti-Doping Agency of India last week states that 74kg freestyle wrestler Narsingh Yadav has failed an out-of-competition anti-doping test,” the release, dated July 26, stated.

“United World Wrestling informed the Indian Olympic Association last week that since the positive test occurred outside of the qualification event they would be allowed replace Yadav with another wrestler, or else vacate the qualification spot,”

“The Indian Olympic Association informed United World Wrestling of their desire to enter Parveen Rana as their nation’s replacement at 74kg in men’s freestyle.

The WFI clarified that while its preference remains Narsingh, they sent the name of Rana to keep the berth in 74 kg with India. “We sent the name of Rana yesterday. The international body told us that we could name a replacement in case Narsigh Yadav doesn’t get exonerated. We named Rana so that India has a representation. If Narsingh gets a clean chit, then he will be going. We are determined to get Narsingh cleared from the doping charges,” a WFI source told Deccan Herald.

Asked why double Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar’s name was not sent, the source said:
“We didn’t want any more controversy. Or else it will appear, that all through we backed Narsingh but when the occasion arrived we sent the name of Sushil. The federation has been steadfast on its stand that Narsingh will go to Rio as he has got India the quota in World Championships.
