The government on Thursday introduced a bill to provide an identity to transgenders and protect them from discrimination.

The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill 2016 seeks to “confer a right upon transgender persons to be recognised as such, and a right to self-perceive gender identity,” Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot said, after introducing the proposed legislation in the Lok Sabha.

The bill seeks to define transgenders, prohibit discrimination against them and arrange issue of identity certificates to them. It also seeks to set up a national council for transgenders. Gehlot said that the bill sought to provide that no establishment should “discriminate against a transgender person in matters relating to employment, recruitment, promotion and other related issues”.
