A former national-level boxer, who helped a gangster escape from police custody while being taken to a Haryana court, has been arrested by Delhi Police’s Crime Branch.

Deepak Pahal, 20, was part of a group of 10 men who attacked a police team taking gangster Jitender to a court in Narwana in Jind district of Haryana for a murder trial on July 30.

Four armed guards of the 3rd Battalion of Delhi Police were escorting Jitender to produce him in court, the police said. According to police, the guards, along with Jitender, boarded a Haryana roadways bus from ISBT, Kashmere Gate to Jind early morning.

At about 6 am, when the bus reached near village Sankhol, Bahardurgarh in Haryana,
10 men came in two cars (one i20 and another SX4) and forced the driver to stop the bus.

The men then entered the bus and threw chilli powder in the guards’ eyes and fired a round to scare them.

After that they got Jitender released from police custody  and fled the place.
According to police, they also snatched one automatic rifle MP-5 from one of the
police personnel before leaving.

Following the incident, a police case was registered in Bahadurgarh and search for the accused was started.

During the investigation, police noticed that the i20 car used in the commission of the crime was robbed a day before the incident from Bawana in Outer Delhi.

Investigators also found out that a gang war between Jitender and one Sunil was going on in the area for the past three years where five members of both the gangs had been eliminated so far.

Reason
Police suspected that Jitender would soon attack Sunil who was lodged in a prison.
Keeping in view of the situation, a police team of the Crime Branch was formed.
On Tuesday around 8 am, after receiving specific information that a member of the Jitender gang would come to Gandhi Nagar in Sonepat, Haryana, a trap was laid and Deepak Pahal alias Boxer was arrested.

On interrogation, Pahal disclosed that he is a national-level boxer and was a junior light weight boxing national champion in 2011. He also told the interrogators that he participated in various international boxing competitions since 2011.

He further disclosed that he along with Rohit, Deepak, Gulshan, Sanjay, Mohit and three other accused from UP (whose names he doesn’t remember) were involved in helping Jitender escape from police.

He said the i20 car used in the crime was robbed in the intervening night of July 29 and 30 from Bawana area by Gulshan, Rohit, Deepak and Malik from one Mohammed Rahees, a factory owner of Bawana Industrial Area.

They abandoned the car in Bahadurgarh after committing the crime.
