Prez's daughter names, shames 'pervert'

Many ignore or suffer online harassment silently, but President Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee decided to deal with the menace head-on.

Sharmistha (50), chief spokesperson of the Congress’ Delhi unit, on Saturday named and shamed a ‘pervert’ who sent her obscene messages on Facebook. She has identified him as Partha Mandal.

The incident came to light when she spoke out on social media about the messages she received on Friday. Tagging Mandal, Sharmistha also posted screenshots of his profile and the messages he sent her. In separate comments, she said she does not know Mandal personally.

“The Economic Offences Wing has received a complaint from Sharmistha Mukherjee today and has registered a case under appropriate sections of the law,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajan Bhagat.

Several people urged her to approach the police for action as they said shaming was not enough and legal proceedings were needed to tackle such incidents.
