Born in Benaras on August 2, 1922, Birla had set up a number of large industrial undertakings such as Orient Paper and Industries, Hyderabad Industries Ltd and Nigeria Engineering Works. The other industries in the group include NEI, GMMCO, Hindustan Motors, Birlasoft, Avtec and Indian Smelting.

One of the important facets of his personality was his empathy for the people. He painstakingly built magnificent temples in Hyderabad, Jaipur and Bhopal and liberally supported the renovation of places of historical, architectural and religious importance to preserve the cultural heritage of India.

He was driven by a philosophy that the role of industry was not only a means for wealth creation but also  way to improve the lives of the community. He was best known for creating large medical research and charitable trusts and educational institutions.
