Operations continue in Doddabommasandra

Last Updated 16 August 2016, 20:51 IST

Continuing its drive in Doddabommasandra in Yelahanka zone, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Tuesday razed a few more buildings to clear encroachments of stormwater drains.

People watched helplessly as their houses were brought down by BBMP's bulldozers to make way for the stormwater drain, which had been encroached upon for decades. It was only recently that the BBMP woke up after areas around Doddabommasandra were flooded.

Meanwhile, Karnataka State Human Rights Commission Chairperson Meera Saksena visited the area and spoke to the affected people.

“People complained that no notices were served to them before the demolition of their buildings. I enquired with the BBMP and they said in the case of encroachment of the stormwater drain, no notices are required. In the larger interest of society, people need to cooperate. Yet, we have to look at displacement of people with compassion and empathy,” said Saksena. The demolition drive by the Palike continued on Siddaiah Road also.
