Paradise for main course lovers

Last Updated 17 August 2016, 19:17 IST

The Embassy in Connaught Place is one of the oldest restaurants of Delhi. When it was launched by P N Malhotra and GK Ghai in 1948, the restaurant used to be a meeting place for couples, business associates, and political heavyweights and even for fixing marriages. It is now handled by third generation restaurateur, Kumar Savar Malhotra, who took it over from his father Sunil Malhotra.

Today, the restaurant has a prominent feature which you see as soon as you enter. It is the floating ceiling with sound absorbent panels and pristine white arches adorned with wrought iron, inspired by Connaught Place’s architecture. With bright lighting and comfortable sitting arrangement, the restaurant continues to be an ideal family place and is famous for lunch and dinner.

The interiors make the restaurant a welcoming place for families. So even on a
Sunday afternoon, the place is jam-packed with birthday celebrations in one corner and family get-togethers in the other.

A ‘Classic Fish and Chips’ and a ‘Prawn Cocktail’ for appetisers can be a great start to your meal, but Metrolife suggests its readers to save space for main course, as the restaurant is a paradise for main course lovers.

To begin with, the restaurant’s ‘Dal Meat’ is extremely popular. Firstly, the idea of mixing dal with mutton is innovative. Secondly, dry urad dal with spicy mutton gravy, does wonders to both your traditional yellow dal and spicy mutton you cook at home.

From the vegetarian section of the menu, we picked ‘Paneer Achari’, which has a surprising amalgamation of aam ka achar in the gravy. Coupled with crispy laccha parantha, ‘Paneer Achari’ can be a great option for all paneer lovers out there.

‘Chicken Masala’ and ‘Embassy Tomato Fish’ are other dishes that stand out in the non-vegetarian menu. ‘Chicken Masala’ has chicken and egg in rich almond and cream sauce tempered with dry red chillies. Though a little on the heavier side, the gravy of the dish is a total winner.

‘Embassy Tomato Fish’ is a creative attempt at making tangy gravy for sole fillet. Perfectly cooked fillet with a flavourful tomato concasse sauce tastes perfect with naan or even tandoori roti. A one-time perfect meal with your family at this one of the oldest restaurants in the city can be worth a while.
