'Rio Olympians from state got Rs 2 lakh each'

The state government has paid Rs two lakh to each of the 11 sportspersons from Karnataka representing India in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Minister of State for Fisheries, Sports and Youth Empowerment Pramodh Madhwaraj said in Manipal on Wednesday.

Speaking at a state-level meeting of assistant directors, deputy directors and joint directors of the Department of Sports and Youth Empowerment, he said the initiative was taken for the first time and aimed to be an incentive for sportspersons.

The minister also spoke about hiring more coaches at the Sports Authority of Karnataka which currently has 87 sports trainers. Besides, four assistant directors are being recruited.

He said the department would review the performance of coaches. The government is also planning to introduce National Service Scheme (NSS) in high schools.
