A real estate businessman and his son, who were arrested on Thursday over the kidnap of a financier from Chikkamagaluru, have been remanded in the custody of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for 10 days.

The case assumed significance as then DySP of Chikkamagaluru, Kallappa Handibag, had committed suicide after being booked for kidnap.

Naveen Shetty, 43, and his son Ashwin Shetty, 19, were arrested at Gorur, Hassan district. The second additional district and sessions judge in Chikkamagaluru, Kambegowda, remanded them in CID custody on Friday.

The duo, along with VHP leader Praveen Khandya, is accused of orchestrating the kidnapping of financier Tejas Gowda. After being  kidnapped from Chikkamagaluru on June 28, Gowda was brought to Bengaluru and detained at a dog-breeding centre owned by Naveen Shetty. He was tortured, and was set free only after the duo confirmed that the ransom of Rs 10 lakh had been paid. A source suggested that Naveen’s wife was likely to be detained for questioning. The CID has arrested a total of 10 people in the case but the prime suspect, Khandya, remains elusive. CID teams are on his trail.
