A three-year-old boy died after coming under the wheels of a school van which dropped him near his house in north Delhi’s Civil Lines area on Tuesday afternoon.

The mishap took place around 1.30 pm when 20-year-old driver Rahul Kumar was dropping Aviral home from John Wesley Preparatory School, two kilometres away. The toddler was rushing towards home when the vehicle hit him. The driver was arrested on the spot.

Aviral’s parents lived in the Railway Colony, Civil Line area. Police said the driver, a regular on the route, dropped four other children before stopping at the bus stop close to the toddler’s home.

Alighting the van, Aviral looked around for his parents who were waiting for him at the bus stop across the road. He tried to rush before the speeding van and went under the wheel. The driver failed to notice the toddler.

The boy’s family and other bystanders stopped the van and pulled the driver from the seat.

Aviral was taken to the nearest hospital, but he succumbed to his injury. On receiving information about the accident, police arrested the driver and charged him under Section 304 for causing death due to negligence.

Aviral’s family recorded their statement at the Civil Lines police station, and then rushed to the hospital where Aviral’s post mortem was conducted.

“The family is not in a condition to talk. They have recorded their statements and the investigation is underway,” said a police officer.
