Bhashyam Circle overpass survey held

Many trees might be chopped for the proposed road-widening project

Highly placed sources in Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) told Deccan Herald that the Palike is contemplating the construction of an overpass at Bhashyam Circle. The overpass would be similar to the one near the BDA office on Bellary Road. A survey in this regard was conducted on Saturday by BBMP engineers at Bhashyam Circle, the sources added.

This project is part of the road-widening work which would start soon on Sankey Road to connect with Yeshwanthapur. “BBMP wants to build a ‘signal-free corridor’ from Cauvery theatre junction to Yeshwanthapur. So it wants to do away with a major bottleneck at Bhashyam Circle,” said the source.

Some residents who got wind of the project were sceptical that the overpass would not only kill more number of trees but also snatch some private properties.

The information so far is that this ambitious project of a ‘signal-free corridor’ is likely to take away at least six metres of land belonging to a private school.

A few days ago, Deccan Herald had reported about the road widening work on Sankey Road. Following the report, members of some residents welfare association met the local MLA Ashwath Narayana and communicated their worries about losing the green trees that were there for many decades. Some BBMP officials were also summoned during the meeting. When the residents asked for the detailed project report of the road widening work, it was not produced there.

The MLA told the residents that the widening of road is essential but the Sankey Road from Cauvery theatre junction to Bhashyam Circle would be taken up in the last leg of the work. However, everyone evaded questions tossed by residents about the overpass at Bhashyam Circle.
