Two men murdered their former boss’s wife and then raped her presuming that she was still alive. The duo wanted to take revenge on their ex-employer who had refused to pay their dues, police said.

Azad Ali, 20, and Shyam, 22, both from Uttar Pradesh, have been arrested for murdering Urmila Devi, 28, the wife of their former employer, Sanjay Kumar Gupta, a pani puri vendor also from that state. The murder was committed on August 15 and the duo was arrested recently.

Ali and Shyam had known Sanjay for a long time.

They had moved to Bengaluru five years ago to work for him. But once, Sanjay dilly-dallied on paying the duo their salary. Whenever they asked for the money, he just dodged them.

The duo left the job and started working for Sanjay’s brother, Sushil Kumar Gupta. Ali asked Sushil to get his brother to pay him his dues. But Sanjay didn’t care and asked him to forget the money. Ali and Shyam got furious and vowed to teach him a lesson.

They planned to beat his wife, Devi. Around 10.45 pm on August 15, they both got drunk and went to Sanjay’s house on Chunchaghatta main road near Konanakunte, south Bengaluru. Expectedly, they found Devi alone in the house. Since she knew the men, she offered them tea. They sat down as she made tea for them. Moments later, they hit her on the head. Then as she collapsed, they smashed her face with a stone lying in the house.

As Devi became motionless, the two men took turns to rape her thinking that she was still alive. But they realised soon that she had died, and fled the spot.

When Sanjay came home, he tried waking his wife up but in vain. He panicked and took her to a private hospital where she was declared brought dead.

The jurisdictional Subramanyapura police took up a case and began the investigation. Poring over the circumstantial evidence, the sleuths were soon on the trail of Ali and Shyam, and hunted them down.

A senior police officer said the suspects didn’t intend to murder Devi. “They have no criminal record and didn’t have an intention to kill her,” he said. “They thought she was still alive after they hit her.”
