The video of a sub-inspector (SI) thrashing a youth near Pipeline road in Kaggalipura, Ramanagaram district, on August 4 has gone viral and has also attracted the attention of senior police officers.

According to the police, the victim, Cheluva, is a resident of Kaggalipura colony. On Sunday night, SI Sunil Kumar attached to the Kaggalipura police station was on a night patrol.  He found Cheluva and a few of his friends standing on the road and talking. Kumar asked them to go home. Cheluva entered into an verbal altercation with the SI. An angry Kumar then thrashed Cheluva.

The incident, captured on CCTV cameras, shows Kumar kicking and punching Cheluva
A senior police officer said: “Kumar claimed that the duo were drunk and were creating a ruckus. The SI asked them to leave the place. Cheluva objected to this, following which Kumar beat him.’’

“This is not the right way. Kumar could have dealt with the situation in a responsible and sensible way. The matter is being taken up by senior police officers,” the officer added.
Kumar told DH: “On Sunday evening, a few people from Bihar who work as labourers in Kaggalipura approached us and told that the local youth threatened them and snatched away their mobile phones. Around 7 pm, I went near Pipeline road and found a group of youths standing. As it was a festival day, several women were walking along the stretch. We asked the youths to leave the place and they obliged. I came back after 45 minutes and again found them smoking. We heard that they were standing there and passing comments.”

“On seeing the police vehicle, a few of the youths fled the spot while Cheluva along with another friend were sitting on a bike. We told him to go away but he spoke in a rude manner. I did not have a lathi and ended up kicking him. The next day, Cheluva came along with his brother and apologised. We asked him not to talk to anyone in such a manner,” added Kumar.
