Rain effect: Houses collapse in H-K districts

Several districts continued to receive heavy rains on Friday.Several bridges in Bidar district were submerged with overflowing streams and rivers, owing to continuous rains in the region for the last couple of days.

At least 300 houses have collapsed in the district and water from the streams have gushed into the fields, damaging standing crops at various places. Most of the schools in the rurals areas declared a holiday on Friday.  Yadgir, Shivamogga and Uttara Kannada districts also received good showers on Friday.

Karwar, Bhatkal, Honnavar, Kumta, Ankola, Haliyal, Mundagod, Joida, Siddapur, Yellapur and Sirsi received good rainfall. Mangaluru experienced drizzle on Friday afternoon and the sky remained overcast throughout the day. Kodagu district received an average of 10.07 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. The bridge-cum-barrage across River Krishna between Kallol-Yadur in Chikkodi taluk is submerged on Friday.

  Light drizzle lashed Belagavi city for about half an hour on Friday. Heavy rains that lashed Kalaburagi city and several parts of the district throughout  Thursday night. According to preliminary reports at least 35 houses have been collapsed either partially or completely in Kalaburagi taluk. Yadgir district also received heavy rains since Thursday night.

Officials face court’s wrath

The District Principal and Sessions Court issued an order to arrest four officials --- CMC commissioner Mohammed Shakeel  and three PWD engineers --- for not repairing the court building and the judges’ quarters properly and later released them on conditional bail here on Friday after they appeared before the court, DHNS reports from Bidar.

The court ordered their arrest as rainwater gushed into the court building and the judges’ quarters. The judges could not attend the court proceedings as rainwater filled their quarters and the court building. The advocates of the officials pleaded that their clients have taken charge recently.
