Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo on Saturday said that the city is going to witness a slew of development works three years down the line with an estimated Rs 1,700 crore investment under various projects.

Addressing media here, Lobo, who complimented both the Central and the state governments for identifying the city along with three other cities to be developed as ‘Smart City’, said the very project alone will attract investment of Rs 1,000 crore for developing fisheries and old port that are synonymous with the city also known as the coastal city.

Both the Central and the state Governments will have to spend equally by investing Rs 200 crore each in the first phase, Rs 150 crore each in both second and third phases, also the final phase, the legislator added.

In addition to this, an estimated Rs 400 crore funds received from Asian Development Bank (ADB) will be spent towards rejuvenation of drinking water lines and underground drainage system (UGD) and Rs 150 crore under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation And Urban Transport (Amrut) scheme, followed by other works totalling Rs 1,700 crore, he noted.

Lobo, who described it as a rare opportunity, advised Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) for drawing a systematic plan towards effective implementation of the development works.

Referring to the proposed ‘Smart City’, Lobo said it has to be implemented within three years as delay in taking up the works may prove costly with the chances of lapse of funds. Apart from developing fisheries and port, other sectors like tourism and information science can also be improved, besides developing a sports city utilising the same funds. It will also prove a stepping stone towards developing the city railway station as a world-class station, he added.
