Out of 65 million Indians, who need surgeries, just 26 million can afford them, Dr Devi Shetty, chairman, Narayana Health, said.

He was speaking at the launch of Institute of Orthopaedics and Joint Replacements in the city. “With the cost being so high, not all patients will be able to afford it,” he added.

Narayana Institute of Orthopedics and Joint Replacements is established at the Whitefield facility in Bengaluru as a specialised centre of excellence supported by academics and training for improved patient care, according to Dr Shetty.

He said the institute would offer a six-month fellowship in basic and complex joint replacements and revision surgeries.

Dr R D Chakravarthy, who would head the institute, said ‘Day Care Surgeries’ would be the future in Joint Replacements .
