India needs to scale up research in solar energy: Ramesh

"Of the top ten solar energy companies across the globe, four are Chinese. If India does not scale up in terms of research in the field of solar energy then ten years down the line we may end up buying it from Chinese companies," Ramesh said.

The Minister said there should be a balance between environment and development. "As we need to sustain economic growth of 8 to 9 per cent and protect the environment as well there should be a middle way. As environment and development go hand-in-hand a balance should be maintained between the two," he said.

The Minister said one of the challenges is to look for talented youth in the field of environment."Future of research in the field of environment does not seem to be bright as there is not much young talent, we see people in the age group of 35 and above," he said.
This is due to various reasons like less incentive, retaining old people and not considering the young talent, Ramesh said.
