Study abroad
Last Updated 16 November 2016, 19:07 IST

Dear Madam,
I am studying Automobile engineering in Bengaluru. I am currently in the fifth semester and plan to take up GATE in my final year. I would like to do higher studies in Automotive engineering or work in a PSU. I am confused as to which paper to select: ME or XE. Can you share some light on the pros and cons of my selection? I also wanted to know if GATE can be cracked by self-study using reference books. Also, please suggest some good books.
A student

Dear Student,
It generally doesn’t really matter whether you take ME or XE, it is important to pick subjects you are strong in. Since you want to pursue Automobile engineering, I would suggest you go with ME. You can crack the exam by self-study and by working on past papers. There are many books available for GATE preparation. Please visit the official GATE website for more information on the different papers like ME, XE etc.

Dear Madam,
I am in Class 12 and I am doing the IBDP programme. I am planning to take up Global BBA in an Indian branch of a global college. I would like to know if it is worth paying almost the same fees as any other college abroad. Also, I would like to know if it is better to do my graduation in India and go abroad for Master’s.
Roshan

Dear Roshan,
Since you are doing IBDP, which prepares you for any university in the world, I would suggest you to also apply to different colleges. There is no advantage in limiting your choices to one school. Especially, if you are not going to benefit in terms of fees.

Ideally, I would suggest you go abroad for your undergraduate studies. If money is not an issue, as I can see from your choice of university, I would recommend a top university in a new country where you can experience learning in a culturally diverse environment. If you want to study in
India, pick a university that is reasonably priced. There are many good institutions to choose from.

Dear Madam,
I am pursuing my final year BE in Mechanical stream. I am interested in doing MS in Germany. My aggregate score in BE is 67.86% till the sixth semester. Please suggest some good colleges for 300 marks in GRE. Also provide information about suitable scholarships.
Sagar S N

Dear Sagar,
Most universities in Germany don’t charge any tuition fees. So, don’t worry about scholarships. The universities known for Mechanical engineering are Technical University of Munich, RWTH Aachen, Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Reutlingen University, University of Stuttgart, Esslingen University of Applied Sciences, Technical University of Berlin and Hamburg University of Technology.

Admission to German Universities is highly competitive since Germany offers students excellent education for free and offers long stay visas. Although it is not mandatory, I would suggest you learn German language. This will help you in the job market.

Dear Madam,
My daughter is presently studying E&C in VTU University and is in her seventh semester. She has been selected by an MNC in a campus interview with a salary of 3.5 lakh per annum. She will also be writing the GRE exam next month.

Should she join the company or do an MS in the US if her score is good? Does an MS in Germany offer equal opportunities? What would be the approximate cost for doing MS in the US? After the completion of MS in the US, what kind of opportunities would she get in India and what would be the
remuneration?
Vivek R Aparaj

Dear Vivek,
Your daughter should pursue her MS before accepting any job. Once she starts working, she will find it difficult to go back to her books. She will certainly have better opportunities after she completes her Master’s. US, Germany and other countries offer excellent programmes and scope for growth. The tuition fees per annum in USA could range between Rs 25 lakh to 49 lakh. In Germany, most universities are free. In the UK, the masters programme is for one year and the fee is around Rs 12 to 18 lakh.

After her completion of MS, she can work anywhere in the world. Salary will not be a constraint for a good student. For now, please ask her to aim for a GRE score of 325.

Dear Madam,
I am doing my second year BE in Electronics and Electrical engineering. Should I start studying for GRE now? Or should I work for two years and then study? Which country is better to do MS?
A student

Dear Student,
Take the GRE and an English test such as TOEFL or IELTS during your final year of BE and do your Master’s as soon as you finish your Bachelors. Complete your studies and then take up a job. All countries have good universities offering excellent programmes. Pick a university based on your GPA, what you want to specialise in, how much fees you are willing to pay and scholarship or graduate assistantship opportunities offered.
