JOIN USThe University of Mysore (UoM) is all set to release the much-awaited UoM centenary celebration commemorative coins of Rs 5 and Rs 100 denominations.
The coins will be released on December 3 by Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu at a programme at Crawford Hall, the administrative block of the UoM, in Mysuru.
The UoM had urged the Union Finance Ministry to mint the commemorative coins to mark the centenary celebrations, two years back, and the design and face value of the currency have been finalised by the department. The coins are being minted at the India Government Mint, in Mumbai.
While Rs 5 coin is of steel, Rs 100 coins would be made of silver. Rs 5 coins will be in circulation in three months, but Rs 100 will be available for numismatists and for people on demand.
UoM Vice Chancellor K S Rangappa told DH, “We approached the Union Finance Ministry after obtaining permission from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to release commemorative coins. With this, UoM becomes the second university in the country to release commemorative coins, after the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh”.
The Finance department decided the face value of the coins and asked the university to send the design and logo to be minted on the coins. The coins are designed on the basis of motto of the university, he said.
Executive kit
The UoM has designed executive kits for the coins. The kit contains Rs 5 and Rs 100 coins and is likely to cost Rs 5,000 each.
As many as 200 kits will be brought to Mysuru. Usually, commemorative coins will be distributed only among dignitaries on the stage during the release programme. Those who want the coins can obtain them directly from the Government Mints. The UoM has obtained special permission from the Finance department to sell the kits in Mysuru, the VC said.
