Continuation of old currency notes sought

Adding to the growing voice against demonetisation of high currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, the Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) activists on Monday staged a protest in front of the the Deputy Commissioner’s Office here.

The activists, led by their leader Durga Prasad, demanded that the circulation of old notes should be continued at least till the situation returns to normalcy. The cooperative banks should also be permitted to accept old notes in exchange (of new notes), they said.

Following the sudden scrapping of notes effective from the midnight of November 8, the poor, labourers and middle class families have been largely affected, they said.

The activists also disputed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claim that the demonetisation of high value notes will help prevent black money that has been stashed in the form of cash.

They said the black money holders have assiduously invested the ill-gotten wealth on real estate and gold.

Besides, the State Bank of India (SBI) that has reportedly written off the loans advanced to liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya, should extend similar treatment to farmers and waive their loans, Prasad demanded.
