Umpire Paul Reiffel has been declared free of any injury after an innocuous throw from deep backward square-leg from Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck on the back his head, sending him sprawling to the turf in pain.

While the reaction from the Australian match official -- who was doing square-leg umpire’s duty at that point -- raised serious concern, scans at a local hospital in the afternoon ruled out any injury. As a precautionary measure, however, he was asked to take rest for the remainder of the day’s play.

“On field umpire Paul Reiffel is fine now. His CT scan is clear and as a precaution he has been advised to take rest today. He is very much at the ground,” said a communique from Indian team’s media manager Nishant Arora.

The incident happened in the 49th over of England’s innings when Bhuvneshwar picked up the ball and relayed it back to Cheteshwar Pujara who was stationed between Reiffel and non-striker’s stumps. Pujara appeared to be a little late in conveying Reiffel about the ball dangerously approaching him and by the time the umpire tried to avoid being hit, it was too late. Reiffel, a former Australian pacer, collapsed even as Bhuvneshwar apologised profusely.

Indian umpire C Shamsuddin, who has officiated in ODIs, was assigned the duty of TV umpire’s job while Marais Erasmus, who was originally on TV, took over Reiffel’s duties.

No Mumbaikar

With Ajinkya Rahane out injured, for the first time, no Mumbai player could make it to the playing eleven of a Test played in Mumbai.

Although Mumbai player Shardul Thakur was included in the squad, he was not included in the playing XI  to mark a rare happening.

There have been instances in the past when a playing eleven had six to seven players from Mumbai.
